Getting your colonoscopy out of the way doesn't have to mean multiple doctors visits, referrals, and follow up appointments!

Schedule your colonoscopy in one simple step with one of Long Island's top gastroenterologists, Dr. Frederick Gandolfo.

Colon cancer is a leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States, ranking second overall. Colon cancer first starts as a small growth, called a polyp, in the colon. Through a screening colonoscopy, these polyps can be identified and removed before they develop into cancer, significantly reducing the risk of developing colon cancer. Unfortunately, colon cancer is often detected at advanced stages when it has already spread to other areas of the body.

At Precision Digestive Care in Huntington, NY, Dr. Gandolfo offers a convenient direct access colonoscopy program. This option allows eligible patients—those without significant health issues—to bypass the initial consultation, saving both time and money.

Many patients who require a colonoscopy, whether it’s their first screening or a follow-up for previous polyps, are eligible for direct access. This approach eliminates the need for pre-procedure and post-procedure office visits, helping you avoid multiple co-pays and the inconvenience of scheduling two appointments.

Colon cancer screenings are generally recommended for men and women starting at age 45. If you are 45 or older and in good general health, you may qualify for a direct access colonoscopy. However, if you are experiencing gastrointestinal symptoms such as abdominal pain, bleeding, or changes in bowel habits, an office consultation may be necessary before scheduling your procedure.

Frequently Asked Questions about Colonoscopy

1

What is the purpose of a colonoscopy?

Colonoscopy is the best way to prevent and detect colorectal cancer. This common cancer begins as a small growth called a polyp. Most polyps are benign, but are considered pre-cancerous growths. If not found and removed, a polyp may become colon cancer over the period of several years. Polyps are very common and usually have no symptoms. Removing colon polyps prevents colon cancer from developing.
2

If a polyp is found during your colonoscopy, it will be removed during the procedure. Removing a polyp is painless. The polyp is then sent out to the pathology lab for testing (biopsy) and a report is available in 1-2 weeks.
3

Colonoscopy is performed at our 13 Central Street office. We have a NYS QUAD A accredited office-based surgery suite on premises to ensure that you have a safe and comfortable experience during your procedure.

4

Colonoscopy typically takes about 20 minutes to complete. However, between check-in, meeting the doctor and anesthesiologist, the procedure, recovery, and check-out, you should budget about 90 minutes, give or take, for the entire visit. Your driver can wait in the office or come back to pick you up after the procedure.
5

Yes, you receive anesthesia for the procedure, which is given by an anesthesiologist physician. The anesthesiologist will monitor you throughout the entire procedure. You should not experience any pain during your colonoscopy. After you wake up from the sedation, you should feel well with no pain or discomfort.
6

No, you need to have a responsible adult sign you out from the office and drive you home.
7

Overall colonoscopy is a very safe procedure, with serious risks happening at a rate of less than one person in a thousand. There is a very low risk of bleeding, infection, perforation of the bowel, pneumonia, and problems with anesthesia. The alternative to colonoscopy is a stool test for colon cancer. Stool-based tests for colon cancer are less accurate and miss cancer and polyps at a significant rate. Stool testing is repeated every 1-3 years. Colonoscopy offers the best protection against colon cancer. Colonoscopy is repeated every 10 years.
